This Charming Wine Bar Became My Escape on a Stressful Chicago Afternoon

Downtown Chicago was testing me that day. A guy on a bike dropped his phone, I almost got hit by a car, somebody was yelling nearby, and then a Divvy bike nearly took me out. At that point, I had one thought: I need a glass of wine. Luckily, I was near the Lyric Opera House when I spotted Eaves, a wine bar I had never been to before. I walked in and immediately liked the place. It was charming, elegant, and had this beautiful old world feel that was a welcome change after everything happening outside. Of course, once I settled in, there was one important question left to answer: what's worth drinking here?

What I Found at Eaves

A Wine List That Made Me Want to Stay Awhile

Once I had a chance to settle in, I started looking through the wine list. Eaves had some serious producers on there, which is always a good sign, but that afternoon I was in an Italian mood. I landed on the 2024 Selvapiana Chianti Rùfina DOCG, made predominantly from Sangiovese in Tuscany.

It sounded like exactly what I wanted after the afternoon I'd been having.

Before the First Sip, Look at the Wine

Before I even tasted it, the color caught my attention. It was a beautiful, brilliant ruby red.

We spend so much time talking about aromas and flavors that sometimes we forget the first part of tasting wine is simply looking at what's in the glass. Color can give you an early introduction to the wine, and this one looked fresh and vibrant.

Then came everything I wanted from Sangiovese. Bright red fruit, cherry, savory herbs, beautiful acidity, and that distinctive Tuscan character that makes these wines so enjoyable with food.

Chianti Rùfina Deserves a Little More Attention

There's More to Chianti Than One Familiar Name

If you drink Italian wine, you've probably come across Chianti plenty of times. Chianti Rùfina is worth getting to know on its own.

Rùfina is one of the historic subzones of Chianti, located northeast of Florence. The wines are often associated with freshness and acidity, qualities that can make Sangiovese especially versatile at the table.

That's part of what I enjoyed about the Selvapiana. There was plenty of character in the glass, but the wine still felt lively and ready for food.

The Lamb Meatballs Made the Pairing

This Is Where Sangiovese's Acidity Did Its Job

I ordered the lamb meatballs, served over squash purée with pomegranate, feta, and slaw. And yes, pomegranate happens to be my favorite fruit, so that certainly didn't hurt.

There was quite a bit happening on the plate. You had the richness of the lamb, the creaminess and slight sweetness of the squash, the saltiness of the feta, and those brighter notes coming through from the pomegranate and slaw.

This is where the acidity in the Sangiovese really came through. It kept the pairing lively against the richness of the lamb, while the savory character of the wine felt completely at home with the dish. Neither side needed to compete for attention. They simply worked well together.

Eaves Was Exactly the Kind of Place I Needed

Old World Charm in the Middle of Downtown Chicago

Once I had a glass in front of me and some food on the table, the chaos outside felt pretty far away.

That's probably what stood out most about Eaves. The space has an elegant, charming feel with plenty of old world influence, but it still feels comfortable enough to walk in, grab a seat, and enjoy a glass. It gave me a chance to slow down for a little while without having to leave downtown.

The wine list was thoughtful, the food worked, and the atmosphere made me want to stay.

Apparently, all I needed to survive downtown Chicago that afternoon was a glass of Chianti Rùfina.

A Convenient Stop Before a Show or Train

The Location Gets an 8 Out of 10 From Me

I'm giving Eaves an 8 out of 10 for location.

Being near the Lyric Opera House makes it an easy place to stop for wine and food before a show. It's also convenient if you're heading toward Union Station and have some time before your train.

But you don't really need somewhere else to be afterward. If you're downtown and the city has been giving you one of those afternoons, Eaves is a pretty good place to step inside, order a glass, and slow things down for a bit.

For me, the Chianti Rùfina and lamb meatballs did the job. If you check out Eaves, I'd love to know what you find on the wine list.

Why This Chianti Worked So Well

Sangiovese Is Made for the Table

One of the things I appreciate about Sangiovese is how naturally it works with food. That bright acidity isn't something you only notice when you're tasting the wine by itself. Put food in front of it and you start to understand why it matters.

With the Selvapiana, the acidity gave the lamb meatballs enough contrast to keep each bite feeling fresh. Then you had the red fruit and savory character playing alongside the different flavors on the plate. It was a good reminder that a wine doesn't need to overpower a dish to make an impression.

Get to Know Chianti Rùfina

If Chianti is already part of your regular rotation, spend a little time exploring Rùfina. And if Sangiovese is still relatively new to you, this is a good style to have on your radar.

You get the recognizable character of the grape, but Rùfina has its own identity within Tuscany. For me, that's part of the fun of Italian wine. You can know a grape pretty well and still find another region or producer that shows you a different side of it.

Eaves was a new spot for me, and I'm glad I walked in. The old world atmosphere immediately caught my attention, but the thoughtful wine list and food gave me a reason to stay. The 2024 Selvapiana Chianti Rùfina was a great find, and pairing it with the lamb meatballs made the experience even better. If you're near the Lyric Opera House or heading toward Union Station, needing somewhere to escape the downtown Chicago rush for a while, put Eaves on your list.
