A French Wine Mood, Italian Food, and a Night Out With Friends at Gibson's Italian

Thursday night in Chicago, I was meeting up with some friends I hadn't seen in a while at Gibson's Italian, and, per usual, I got there first. That gave me a little extra time to do what I do best and start looking at the wine list. I was in a French wine mood that night, and with a serious wine program in front of me, I knew exactly where I wanted to start. Just stick with me for a minute, and I'll tell you how it went.

Starting With Bordeaux

A 2023 Margaux Caught My Attention

I went straight to Bordeaux and found a 2023 Chevalier de Lascombes Margaux.

This is a wine from the Left Bank, and it had the kind of character I was looking for that night. There was beautiful fruit, some spice, a little herbaceous character, and plenty of tannin.

You could tell right away that this was a wine with structure, but it still had plenty of fruit to keep things enjoyable.

The Structure Made It a Great Dinner Wine

What I liked about this bottle was how naturally it worked at the table.

Bordeaux can have enough structure and tannin to stand up to richer dishes, and that's exactly what I wanted with dinner. The wine had enough going on to make you pay attention, but it wasn't trying to take over the meal. That's a big part of what makes a structured red so much fun with food.

French Wine With Italian Food? Give It a Shot

Meatballs, Ricotta, and Basil

I paired the Bordeaux with meatballs, ricotta, and basil, which might not be the first combination you think of when you hear Margaux.

I normally love pairing food and wine from the same region, and there's a good reason that approach works so often. But I was already in a French wine mood, and I wasn't about to change my mind just because the restaurant was Italian. Sometimes you have to give it a shot and see what happens.

The Tomato Sauce Changed Everything

And it definitely worked.

The rich tomato sauce alongside the structure of the Bordeaux was exactly what I wanted. The acidity and fruit of the dish gave the wine something to work with, while the tannin made sense with the meat. The ricotta and basil added another layer to the combination, and suddenly the fact that the wine and food came from different traditions didn't matter at all.

When the Table Called for Champagne

Pierre Péters Was the Easy Choice

As more friends arrived, the night shifted into that comfortable rhythm you get when everyone settles in and the conversation starts flowing.

One of my friends asked me to choose a Champagne for the table, and I was happy to oblige. I spotted Pierre Péters, and that was an easy decision for me. It is a Blanc de Blancs, a style made from white grape varieties, most commonly Chardonnay.

Pierre Péters gives you those beautiful brioche and almond notes, along with bright acidity and fine bubbles. Then there's the mousse, that beautiful, gorgeous, creamy texture that makes the Champagne so enjoyable on the palate.

It's the kind of bottle that can get people talking because there is enough character to make it interesting without making it feel overly complicated.

If you want to impress the table without automatically reaching for one of the obvious luxury Champagne names, this is a name worth remembering.

Everybody at the table loved it, which is always a pretty good sign.

You Don't Always Need the Obvious Bottle

Look Beyond the Names Everyone Knows

There's nothing wrong with ordering a famous Champagne. If you love Dom Pérignon, go for it. But when you're choosing wine for a group, I like the idea of finding something that people may not already know. It gives everyone something new to experience.

You can still have that wow factor without ordering the bottle everyone recognizes before it even hits the table.

A Good Recommendation Can Change the Night

That's also why I like having a few names in your back pocket. You don't need to memorize a huge list of producers or know every vintage. You just need a couple of wines you trust and feel comfortable recommending.

Pierre Péters is one of those names for me, especially when I'm looking for Champagne that can impress a group without going straight for the most obvious choice.

Great Wine Doesn't Have to Follow the Rules

French Wine at an Italian Restaurant

One of my favorite things about this night was that nothing had to line up perfectly on paper.

I had Bordeaux at an Italian restaurant, paired it with meatballs and tomato sauce, and then moved on to Champagne with the table.

Normally, I love keeping food and wine from the same region, but wine is also about enjoying the moment. If the bottle works with the food and everyone is enjoying it, that's what matters.

Trust Your Mood Sometimes

That's a pretty good wine tip in itself. Sometimes you already know what you're in the mood for, and you don't need to talk yourself out of it. I was in the mood for French wine that night, and Gibson's Italian had the selection to make it happen. The result was a great meal, a couple of bottles I really enjoyed, and a table full of friends having a good time.

Why Gibson's Italian Keeps Bringing Me Back

Serious Wine in a Comfortable Setting

Gibson's Italian has a serious wine program, but it still feels like the kind of place where you can settle in, enjoy your meal, and spend time with people you care about. That's an important combination for me. A great wine list is one thing, but having that list in a setting where you actually want to stay for another glass and another conversation makes the experience that much better.

A Place for Business or Pleasure

I've enjoyed wine in plenty of different settings, and there is something special about a restaurant that works for both business and pleasure. Gibson's Italian fits that description for me. You can have a dinner with friends, meet someone for business, celebrate something, or simply go because you want a great meal and good wine.

If you're in Chicago and looking for a place where serious wine can be part of a great night out, Gibson's Italian is one I'd definitely give a shot.

The Best Part Was the Night Itself

Wine Has a Way of Bringing People Together

At the end of the night, it wasn't really about choosing the perfect Bordeaux or finding the most impressive Champagne. Those bottles were part of the experience, but the real highlight was sitting around the table with friends, catching up, sharing food, and enjoying a few great glasses together.

A good bottle can give a conversation somewhere to start, but the people around the table are what make the night memorable.

Wine doesn't always need to be complicated, and neither does a great night out. Sometimes it's a Bordeaux that catches your attention, a plate of meatballs that works better with it than you expected, and a bottle of Pierre Péters that gets the whole table excited. That's exactly what happened on this Thursday night in Chicago, and it's the kind of wine experience I love sharing. If you're looking for your next place for great food, serious wine, and good conversation, check out Gibson's Italian for yourself.
